Mediation is an impartial and voluntary process that can resolve issues quickly among disputing parties. With the assistance of an impartial, independent mediator who guides you through the process with the school to address special education concerns to resolve disagreements. Both you and the school must agree to participate.
When mediation may be requested
Mediation may be requested by either the school or the parent in the following situations:
- When a dispute arises between parents and schools.
- In lieu of a resolution meeting, when parents file a due process complaint.
- When a state written complaint is filed.
How to request mediation

Outcome of Mediation
If mediation results in a successful resolution, both parents and the school will sign a legally binding written agreement outlining the terms of the resolution. This agreement is enforceable in any state court of competent jurisdiction or a United States district court.
If mediation does not result in a successful resolution, the parties may exercise their right to resolve the matters in dispute through the state written complaint or due process complaint procedures.
