Learning to drive is an exciting milestone, but driving is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. The Driver Education Program equips high school students with the essential knowledge, skills and experience to become responsible and safe drivers.

E tusa ai ma Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes Section 302A-413, the Driver and Traffic Safety Education Program is open to all Hawaiʻi teens who are at least 15 years and 6 months of age and under 19 years of age with a valid Hawaiʻi Instructional Permit.

Notice of Public Hearing

Pursuant to sections 91-3 and 92-41, Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (Department) gives notice that it will hold a public hearing to receive testimony on the proposed adoption of a new Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules chapter: Title 8, Subtitle 2, Chapter 29, Driver Education and Traffic Safety Program (PDF). 

The proposed rules would complete the administrative structure of the Department’s driver education program and codify statewide practices intended to support consistent, fair, and transparent operation at public high schools. The proposed chapter addresses legislative mandates, program definitions, funding, curriculum and certification, program administration, and operational guidelines.
