In the event of a local emergency or an unplanned issue that would prevent a 학교 from safely operating, 학교 principals work in tandem with complex area superintendents to make decisions regarding short-term 학교 closures.

학교 Closures​

In the event of large-scale events such as a hurricane, we work with our partners in state and county emergency management to make a determination on whether a 학교 should remain open. Many of our 학교 campuses are designated emergency shelters that are activated by counties in consultation with the 하와이 비상 관리국 (HI-EMA). County’s emergency response resources and information are below:

Power outages may occur during 학교 hours. While it can be inconvenient, 학교 administrators and state office leadership will closely monitor local county alerts. If a power outage occurs, in most cases a 학교 campus will remain open. Generally, keeping students on campus is the safest choice.

In the event of a 학교 closure, notification will be sent from the 학교 directly to families and will also be posted to the HIDOE website. Please ensure that your child’s 학교 has your most up-to-date contact information.

모두 schools conduct the following required drills (this 동영상 개요를 제공합니다):

  • Lockdown: A lockdown takes place if an internal or external threat is identified at the 학교. All 학교 doors are locked and students are confined to classrooms. No entry into or exit from the 학교 will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.
  • Shelter in Place: Students take refuge in designated areas to protect them from hazardous materials or severe weather. No entry into or exit from the 학교 will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.
  • Evacuation (including fire): Certain emergencies may require students and staff to evacuate the 학교. Evacuations are conducted when it is no longer safe to remain on campus. In the event the emergency continues and students are not able to return to campus, parent or guardian reunification procedures will take place. Please familiarize yourself with your 학교’s reunification procedures.
  • 지진: 행동 요령은 몸을 웅크리고, 몸을 가리고, 진동이 멈출 때까지 기다리는 것입니다.
  • Tsunami: For schools in tsunami zones, this is an evacuation drill to a designated area away from the reach of tsunami waves.

Tsunami-Zone 학교

Schools that lie in tsunami zones practice evacuation based on a locally generated tsunami. This could result in a tsunami wave arriving on shore in 10-30 minutes. All schools practice evacuating tsunami zones within 10 minutes. Parents are directed to stay away from campus until the emergency has passed. Schools that lie within tsunami-zones include:

  • 오아후: Ka'a'awa 초등학교, Hau'ula 초등학교, Sunset Beach 초등학교, Hale'iwa 초등학교, Lā'ie 초등학교, Waialua 초등학교, Wai'anae 고등학교, Wa'ianae 중급, Nānāikapono 초등학교, Iroquois Point 초등학교, Mā'ili 초등학교, Ala Wai 초등학교.
  • 하와이: Kapi'olani 초등학교, Keaukaha 초등학교, Kahakai 초등학교.
  • Kaua'i: Hanalei 초등학교, Kekaha 초등학교.

Emergencies are a stressful time, but parents and caregivers should be assured that school staff are prepared through regular and updated drills. Parents and caregivers can help by doing the following:

    • Ensure that your child’s emergency contact information is accurate and current.
    • All HIDOE schools have emergency plans. Become familiar with your 학교’s emergency plan and parent/guardian reunification procedures in the event of a 학교 evacuation.

  • In case of a 학교 emergency: Although your first reaction would be to call or rush to your child’s 학교, please follow these tips:
    • Do not call or rush to your child’s 학교. Phone lines and staff are needed for emergency response efforts.
    • Do not phone your child. Staff and students are discouraged from using cell phone communication for safety reasons.
    • Tune in to local TV/radio stations for official 학교 news alerts.
    • Rely only on official communication from 학교, public safety or HIDOE officials.
    • 자녀와의 재결합에 대한 공식 정보를 들어보세요. 학생은 비상 연락처로 기록되어 있고 운전면허증, 군인 신분증 또는 여권과 같은 사진이 있는 신분증을 제시한 부모/보호자에게만 공개됩니다.

제19장

In order to keep our schools safe, rules have been established relating to student misconduct. These rules also govern searches of students and seizures of property. Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules, 제19장(PDF), are derived from state law. It’s important that students and parents review this information to be aware of the consequences of a Chapter 19 violation. 

Safety on and off campus

Police will be engaged when there is real or perceived danger involving our students or campuses. Administrators and staff will initiate safety protocols when incidents happen on campus, and facilitate communication with families, community groups and law enforcement when incidents involving students happen off campus.

Hawaiʻi’s law enforcement organizations are an important part of keeping 학교 communities safe. Police community outreach educates students about safety.

Families should also speak with their children about basic safety measures when they are out in public and do not have a trusted adult nearby:

  • 낯선 사람으로부터 거리를 두고, 그들에게 말을 걸거나 아무것도 받지 마세요.
  • 모르는 사람과는 어디에도 가지 마세요. 낯선 사람의 차를 절대 타지 마세요.
  • 낯선 사람이 다가오면, 신뢰할 수 있는 어른에게 즉시 도움을 요청하세요.
  • 친구 시스템을 이용하세요. 혼자 걷는 것은 피하세요.
  • 낯선 사람이 당신을 붙잡으면, 그 낯선 사람을 멈추기 위해 무엇이든 하세요. 도움을 요청하세요.
  • 의심스러운 활동이 있으면 신뢰할 수 있는 어른에게 신고하세요.
  • Be alert of your surroundings and let others know where you will be and what time you will be back.

The surrounding 학교 neighborhood and community are our partners in watching for and reporting suspicious activity around campuses. We encourage neighbors to report suspicious activity to 학교 staff and/or law enforcement.
