In the event of a local emergency or an unplanned issue that would prevent a 学校 from safely operating, 学校 principals work in tandem with complex area superintendents to make decisions regarding short-term 学校 closures.

学校 Closures​

In the event of large-scale events such as a hurricane, we work with our partners in state and county emergency management to make a determination on whether a 学校 should remain open. Many of our 学校 campuses are designated emergency shelters that are activated by counties in consultation with the ハワイ緊急事態管理局 (HI-EMA). County’s emergency response resources and information are below:

• ホノルル市および郡: 緊急管理部

• マウイ郡: マウイ緊急管理局
• カウアイ郡: カウアイ島緊急事態管理局

停電

Power outages may occur during 学校 hours. While it can be inconvenient, 学校 administrators and state office leadership will closely monitor local county alerts. If a power outage occurs, in most cases a 学校 campus will remain open. Generally, keeping students on campus is the safest choice.

In the event of a 学校 closure, notification will be sent from the 学校 directly to families and will also be posted to the HIDOE website. Please ensure that your child’s 学校 has your most up-to-date contact information.

緊急訓練

全て 学校s conduct the following required drills (this ビデオ 概要を示します):

• Lockdown: A lockdown takes place if an internal or external threat is identified at the 学校. All 学校 doors are locked and students are confined to classrooms. No entry into or exit from the 学校 will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.
• Shelter in Place: Students take refuge in designated areas to protect them from hazardous materials or severe weather. No entry into or exit from the 学校 will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.
• Evacuation (including fire): Certain emergencies may require students and staff to evacuate the 学校. Evacuations are conducted when it is no longer safe to remain on campus. In the event the emergency continues and students are not able to return to campus, parent or guardian reunification procedures will take place. Please familiarize yourself with your 学校’s reunification procedures.
• 地震: 手順としては、しゃがんで覆い、揺れが止まるまでその場に留まることです。
• Tsunami: For 学校s in tsunami zones, this is an evacuation drill to a designated area away from the reach of tsunami waves.

Tsunami-Zone 学校s

学校s that lie in tsunami zones practice evacuation based on a locally generated tsunami. This could result in a tsunami wave arriving on shore in 10-30 minutes. All 学校s practice evacuating tsunami zones within 10 minutes. Parents are directed to stay away from campus until the emergency has passed. 学校s that lie within tsunami-zones include:

• オアフ島: カアアワ小学校、ハウウラ小学校、サンセットビーチ小学校、ハレイワ小学校、ライエ小学校、ワイアルア小学校、ワイアナエ高校、ワイアナエ中級、ナナイカポノ小学校、イロコイポイント小学校、マーイリ小学校、アラワイ小学校。
• ハワイ: 酋長カピオラニ小学校、ケアウカハ小学校、カハカイ小学校。
• カウアイ島: ハナレイ小学校、ケカハ小学校。

Emergencies are a stressful time, but parents and caregivers should be assured that school staff are prepared through regular and updated drills. Parents and caregivers can help by doing the following:

  • All HIDOE 学校s have emergency plans. Become familiar with your 学校’s emergency plan and parent/guardian reunification procedures in the event of a 学校 evacuation.

• In case of a 学校 emergency: Although your first reaction would be to call or rush to your child’s 学校, please follow these tips:

  • Do not phone your child. Staff and students are discouraged from using cell phone communication for safety reasons.
  • Tune in to local TV/radio stations for official 学校 news alerts.
  • Rely only on official communication from 学校, public safety or HIDOE officials.
  • お子様との再会に関する公式情報をご確認ください。生徒は、緊急連絡先として記録され、運転免許証、軍人身分証明書、パスポートなどの写真付き身分証明書を提示する親/保護者のもとにのみ引き渡されます。

In order to keep our 学校s safe, rules have been established relating to student misconduct. These rules also govern searches of students and seizures of property. Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules, 第19章（PDF）, are derived from state law. It’s important that students and parents review this information to be aware of the consequences of a Chapter 19 violation. 

Safety on and off campus

Police will be engaged when there is real or perceived danger involving our students or campuses. Administrators and staff will initiate safety protocols when incidents happen on campus, and facilitate communication with families, community groups and law enforcement when incidents involving students happen off campus.

Hawaiʻi’s law enforcement organizations are an important part of keeping 学校 communities safe. Police community outreach educates students about safety.

Families should also speak with their children about basic safety measures when they are out in public and do not have a trusted adult nearby:

• 見知らぬ人からは離れてください。話しかけたり、何かを受け取ったりしないでください。
• 知らない人と一緒にどこかへ行かないでください。知らない人からの車に乗せてもらうことも絶対にしないでください。

• 見知らぬ人につかまれた場合は、何でもしてその人を止めてください。大声で助けを求めてください。
• 疑わしい行為があった場合は、信頼できる大人に報告してください。
• Be alert of your surroundings and let others know where you will be and what time you will be back.

The surrounding 学校 neighborhood and community are our partners in watching for and reporting suspicious activity around campuses. We encourage neighbors to report suspicious activity to 学校 staff and/or law enforcement.
