To contribute to the revitalization of the Hawaiian language and culture, we offer a K-12 Hawaiian language immersion education in our Kaiapuni schools. Classes in Kaiapuni schools are conducted exclusively in the Hawaiian language. English is introduced as a subject starting in Grade 5.
Policy & Commitment
We are guided by Board of Education Policy 105.8 (“reasonable access to Hawaiian immersion”) and the Implementation Plan for the 2023-29 Strategic Plan, which calls for a Kaiapuni education strategic plan. These policies help ensure that growth of Kaiapuni education is high quality and accessible.
Investing in Our Teachers
Quality immersion education requires quality teachers. Students’ and families’ interest in Kaiapuni education has grown faster than the availability of qualified teachers for Kaiapuni education. The Department continues to partner with teacher preparation programs, the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board, and the University of Hawai‘i to develop more Kaiapuni educators.
Since January 2020, every Kaiapuni-licensed teacher receives an $8,000 annual salary differential — one of several “Grow Our Own” strategies designed to recruit and retain ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi educators.
Kaiapuni Distance Learning
The Department offers Kaiapuni education in grades K-12 via distance learning. The Kaiapuni Distance Learning Program offers options for students who thrive in the online modality and provides access for students who may not be able to access an in-person Kaiapuni program.
There are specific enrollment capacities and criteria that will guide student participation, ensuring resources are distributed effectively and that student needs are met.
