Lahaina Employee Workforce Housing

The Department’s employee housing in Lahaina is expected to open in March 2026. The complex is designed to help attract and keep great teachers and staff, especially in West Maui. The project is made possible through state funding, including strong support from Gov. Josh Green, M.D., as well as capital improvement funds secured through the legislature and the Major Disaster Fund.

More information including the online application portal is available on the HIDOE’s staff intranet. The intranet requires an employee login. For login assistance, employees should contact the HIDOE IT Help Desk at help.hidoe.org or 808-564-6000.

Online applications will open on November 1, 2025. An early application period for Lahainaluna complex employees will be from Monday, October 13 at 4 p.m. to Sunday, October 26 at 4 p.m.

Leases will be offered at affordable rates. Utilities included with the rent: water, sewer and trash removal. A utility allowance is credited toward rent each month.

Security deposit

  • A base security deposit shall be required from all tenants.
  • If the tenant has 1 pet, an additional $500 deposit shall be required.
  • If the tenant has 2 pets, an additional $1,000 shall be required.
  • Service and assistant animals are not considered pets and no additional deposit shall be required for those animals.

Payment method

  • All financial matters will be administered by Kokua Realty, LLC.
  • It is mandatory that recurring payments be made via payroll deduction.
  • Initial payments and security deposits may require check payments.

Eligibility and Prioritization

Applicants must be full-time HIDOE employees. Priority will be given based on employees’ work location, employees whose housing was impacted by the 2023 wildfires, years of service, and household income.

Employees may apply as individuals or family households. Unrelated employees may share a two-bedroom unit; these employees should apply individually.

House Rules Highlights

  • Tenants must be full-time HIDOE employees. Household occupants may also include the employee’s spouse or significant other, and/or dependents (up to the maximum occupancy of a unit).
  • Residency in HIDOE employee workforce housing is limited to two years with few exceptions.
  • Pets may be allowed, though there are limitations on the number and types of pets. Pet owners will also need to provide an additional security deposit and have renters insurance.
  • No firearms.
  • No smoking or drugs.
  • No alcohol outside of the unit.
