Hawai\u02bbi public schools prepare students for college, careers and community engagement through rigorous academic standards and diverse learning opportunities. This page outlines the coursework and credit requirements for a Hawai\u02bbi high school diploma, as well as pathways to honors recognition, STEM achievements, and the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">VISION OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High school graduation requirements are set by <a href=\"https:\/\/boe.hawaii.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260108_SAC_Visionpolicyrev.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/boe.hawaii.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260108_SAC_Visionpolicyrev.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Board of Education policy<\/a> (PDF). The Hawai\u02bbi State Department of Education, together with families and communities, envisions every graduate as a lifelong learner who is globally competitive and locally committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graduates will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply academic knowledge and an innovative mindset to think critically, communicate effectively and create impactful contributions in the pursuit of excellence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be resilient and adaptable to an ever-changing world. Graduates will take initiative in charting their next steps to advance their life journey, such as pursuing postsecondary education, a career, entrepreneurship, service or exploration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivate well-being and compassion, care for self and others, and build deep roots in Hawai`i to fulfill their kuleana and strengthen their community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earning a diploma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A high school diploma shall be issued to students who meet the following minimum course and credit requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout mtr-table mtr-thead-th\"><thead><tr><th data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-th-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Subject<\/div><\/th><th data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-th-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>High School Diploma<\/strong><\/div><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">English<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>4 credits<\/strong>: English Language Arts 1 (1.0 credit) and English Language Arts 2 (1.0 credit); Expository Writing* (0.5 credit); and<br>Common Core-aligned language arts electives or proficiency-based<br>equivalents [ELA basic electives (1.5 credits)].<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Social Studies<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>4 credits<\/strong>: U.S. History and Government (1.0 credit); World History and Culture (1.0 credit); Modern History of Hawai\u2018i (0.5 credit); Participation in a Democracy (0.5 credit); and Social Studies basic elective (1.0 credit).<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Mathematics<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>3 credits<\/strong>: Algebra 1 (1.0 credit); Geometry (1.0 credit); and mathematics basic elective (1.0 credit)<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Science<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>3 credits<\/strong>: Biology 1 (1.0 credit); and science basic electives (2.0 credits)<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">World Language Fine Arts Career and Technical Education\/JROTC<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>2 credits<\/strong> in one of the specified programs of study.<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Physical Education (P.E.)<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>1 credit<\/strong>: Physical Education Lifetime Fitness (0.5 credit); and Physical Education basic elective (0.5 credit)<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Health<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>0.5 credit<\/strong> in Health Today and Tomorrow<\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Personal Transition Plan<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>0.5 credit<\/strong><\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\">Electives (Any Subject Area)<\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>6 credits<\/strong><\/div><\/td><\/tr><tr><td data-mtr-content=\"Subject\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>TOTAL:<\/strong><\/div><\/td><td data-mtr-content=\"High School Diploma\" class=\"mtr-td-tag\"><div class=\"mtr-cell-content\"><strong>24 credits<\/strong><\/div><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*<em>Or equivalent course.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><br><\/em>Notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two credits in a single World Language. Credits must be taken in sequence with consecutive course numbers in the study of one language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two credits in a Fine Arts discipline: Visual Arts, Music, Drama or Dance. Credits do not need to be in a single discipline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CTE: Two credits need to be in a single <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/academics\/secondary-middle-high-school\/career-technical-education\/\">career pathway program of study<\/a> sequence. The credit beyond Algebra 2 must be earned via the following courses or equivalent Running Start math courses: Algebra 3, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Precalculus, Probability, Statistics, Introduction to College Mathematics, Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, IB Math Studies, or IB Math Standard Level, AND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 credits of science: Of the four credits, one credit must be in Biology 1 or equivalent IB Biology; or AP Biology courses, AND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 credits minimum must be from AP\/IB\/Running Start courses (equivalent to credits for two college courses).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CTE Honors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete two courses in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/academics\/secondary-middle-high-school\/career-technical-education\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"111\">program of study<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Earn a B or better in each required program of study (coursework).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet or exceed proficiency on performance-based assessments for corresponding rogram of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">STEM Honors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4 credits of math: The four credits must include one credit for Algebra 2 and one credit beyond Algebra 2. The credit beyond Algebra 2 must be earned via the following courses or equivalent Running Start math courses: Algebra 3, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Precalculus, Probability, Statistics, Introduction to College Mathematics, Calculus,&nbsp;AP Calculus, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, IB Math Studies, or IB Math Standard Level, AND<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4 credits of science: Of the four credits, one credit must be in Biology 1 or equivalent IB Biology; or AP Biology courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successful completion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1CgTzqHZr4kImwllx0L5Xn3ppPAWqvqS1xrGQqh6py0Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM Capstone Project\u200b (Google Docs)<\/a> in one of the approved ACCN courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grade Point Average<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cumulative grade point average applies to all graduates. Learn more about <a href=\"\/DOE%20Forms\/GPA.pdf\">how GPAs are calculated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.5+ to 3.8.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.8+ and above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Valedictorian Designation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Effective for the Class of 2016 and beyond, graduating seniors will be declared valedictorian if the following criteria are met:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GPA of 4.0; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned and met the requirements of one of the Honor Recognition Certificates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valedictorians will be named after the third quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seal of Biliteracy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hawai\u2018i State Board of Education established a <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/academics\/seal-of-biliteracy\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"37\">Seal of Biliteracy<\/a> to be awarded upon graduation to students who demonstrate a high proficiency in both of the state&#8217;s two official languages (English and Hawaiian) OR either of the state\u2019s two official languages and at least one additional language, including American Sign Language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commencement exercises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commencement exercises may be scheduled any time after the last day of school for seniors. The last day of school for seniors shall be set by the Hawai\u02bbi State Department of Education.
