{"id":9998,"date":"2023-05-12T10:22:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T20:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/?p=9998"},"modified":"2025-03-24T10:22:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T20:22:57","slug":"2023-over-70-oahu-public-schools-offer-fresh-local-poi-to-students-and-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/vi\/2023-over-70-oahu-public-schools-offer-fresh-local-poi-to-students-and-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 70 O\u2018ahu public schools offer fresh local poi to students and staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In effort to increase local menu offerings to students, over 70 O\u2018ahu public schools offered fresh local poi this May to students and staff as an accompanying lunch menu item.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re really excited that for the first time in over a decade, we&#8217;re serving poi on our regular school menus,\u201d said Randall Tanaka, Assistant Superintendent of the Office of Facilities and Operations, Hawai\u2018i State Department of Education. \u201cWe started with poi because there is truly a cultural significance and connection to our communities\u2026 All the kids in Hawai\u2018i eat poi \u2014 we know that they eat it at home and we should be serving it in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department\u2019s farm-and-school initiative aims to enhance food sustainability in Hawai\u2018i, and aligns with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/slh\/Years\/SLH2021\/SLH2021_Act175.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e0n 175<\/a>, t\u1eadp trung v\u00e0o vi\u1ec7c c\u1ea3i thi\u1ec7n s\u1ee9c kh\u1ecfe c\u1ee7a h\u1ecdc sinh \u0111\u1ed3ng th\u1eddi h\u1ed7 tr\u1ee3 n\u00f4ng d\u00e2n \u0111\u1ecba ph\u01b0\u01a1ng.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first rollout of fresh local poi from Pomai Kulolo LLC was allocated to O\u2018ahu schools on a first come, first served basis with over 23,000 4-ounce servings distributed among participating schools. Other O\u2018ahu and neighbor island schools that wanted to participate but were impacted by procurement limitations were encouraged to incorporate local u&#8217;ala (sweet potato) into their lunch menus this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most participating schools served the local poi during lunch today to complement their lunch menu offering of kalua pork with cabbage, lomi tomato and pineapple chunks. To remain in compliance with meal pattern and dietary standards, schools either offered students a choice of brown rice or poi, or replaced the normal brown rice serving with poi.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReception has been outstanding from students \u2014 we expect to expand this throughout the state and we&#8217;re here to help support the farm-and-school partnership and our local farmers,\u201d Tanaka said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department is working closely with local vendors statewide to learn more about supply capacities and to see how fresh local poi can be scaled across all schools in the future on a regular basis.
