{"id":17916,"date":"2026-01-09T12:39:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T22:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/?p=17916"},"modified":"2026-02-02T10:06:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T20:06:34","slug":"2026-financial-literacy-requirement-for-hawaii-public-school-students-to-begin-next-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/tl\/2026-financial-literacy-requirement-for-hawaii-public-school-students-to-begin-next-school-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial literacy requirement for Hawai\u2018i public school students to begin next school year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To ensure Hawai\u02bbi public school students are prepared for life after high school, the Hawai\u02bbi State Department of Education (HIDOE) will require students to complete a financial literacy educational opportunity beginning in the 2026-27 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting with incoming freshmen in the Class of 2030, all students in Hawai\u02bbi public schools must successfully complete a financial literacy educational opportunity prior to graduation and document completion through their Personal Transition Plan (PTP).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PTP is a required half-credit course for all students and is necessary to earn a high school diploma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the formal requirement, high schools are encouraged to have students in the graduating Classes of 2027, 2028 and 2029 document their financial literacy education within their PTPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want our students to leave high school confident and capable of managing their finances,\u201d Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. \u201cFinancial literacy helps students make informed decisions, avoid common financial pitfalls, and know where to turn for support. This requirement reflects our commitment to ensuring every graduate has the knowledge and skills needed to build long-term financial well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also want to acknowledge Sen. Michelle Kidani for her support of the Department\u2019s efforts as former chair of the Senate Education Committee, as well as our community partners who are helping schools to offer a variety of learning opportunities for our students,\u201d Hayashi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools may meet the requirement through a variety of instructional approaches, including a standalone elective course, integration into existing courses, self-paced learning options, or other instructional designs that align with <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Financial-Literacy-Standards.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Financial-Literacy-Standards.pdf\">HIDOE\u2019s financial literacy program standards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standards, developed by HIDOE\u2019s Office of Curriculum and Instructional Design, are based on the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jumpstart.org\/education\/national-standards\/\">National Standards for Personal Finance Education<\/a> from the Council for Economic Education and the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.
