HONOLULU \u2014 Three Hawai\u02bbi middle schools are being celebrated on the national stage for creating schools where adolescents feel supported, challenged and inspired. \u0100liamanu, Moanalua and Kaimuk\u012b Middle Schools have been named 2025 \u201cSchools of Distinction\u201d by the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE), placing them among only 24 schools nationwide to earn the honor this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award recognizes schools that go above and beyond in meeting the unique needs of middle schoolers \u2014 not only academically, but socially and emotionally. Each school went through a rigorous process that included evidence of best practices and interviews with students, staff and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis award is a testament to our schools\u2019 commitment to creating positive environments that encourage growth, exploration and well-being during a crucial time in students\u2019 lives,\u201d Superintendent Keith Hayashi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0100liamanu Middle serves a highly transient student population, with about 70% of students coming from military families. Despite the challenges of constant change, the school has built a strong sense of belonging through programs like its Panther Leadership Academy and Transition Center, ensuring every student feels supported and connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaimuk\u012b Middle reimagined its school schedule during the pandemic to create \u201cSTAR time\u201d \u2014 a daily period that combines study hall, tutoring, advisory, and intervention. The approach gives students personalized support while keeping time for extracurriculars and passions that fuel joy and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moanalua Middle has embraced a \u201cteaming\u201d model that pairs students with trusted adults and peers, strengthening academic and social-emotional growth. With only two years to prepare students for high school, the model helps staff maximize every moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are incredibly proud of our staff\u2019s commitment to the middle school model,\u201d Principal Komarey Moss said. \u201cThis distinction validates and reinforces our practices, affirming that what we do is exactly what our adolescents need to be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three schools join Stevenson Middle and \u02bbEwa Makai Middle, which earned the distinction last year. Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s presence in this national program highlights how local schools are innovating to meet adolescents\u2019 needs while honoring community values. The honorees will be celebrated at AMLE\u2019s 52nd Annual Conference for Middle Level Education in Indianapolis in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
