{"id":9774,"date":"2024-04-19T10:32:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T20:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/?p=9774"},"modified":"2025-03-21T10:35:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T20:35:54","slug":"2024-kapaa-high-principal-tommy-cox-recognized-with-25000-leadership-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/ja\/2024-kapaa-high-principal-tommy-cox-recognized-with-25000-leadership-award\/","title":{"rendered":"\u30ab\u30d1\u30a2\u9ad8\u6821\u306e\u6821\u9577\u30c8\u30df\u30fc\u30fb\u30b3\u30c3\u30af\u30b9\u304c$25,000\u30ea\u30fc\u30c0\u30fc\u30b7\u30c3\u30d7\u8cde\u3092\u53d7\u8cde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tommy Cox of Kapa\u2018a High School was praised for expanding access to college-level courses, career academy pathways and Career and Technical Education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bKapa\u2018a High School Principal Tommy Cox was named the winner of the 2024&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandinsurance.com\/masayuki-tokioka-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u6642\u5ca1\u96c5\u4e4b\u512a\u79c0\u30b9\u30af\u30fc\u30eb\u30ea\u30fc\u30c0\u30fc\u30b7\u30c3\u30d7\u8cde<\/a>&nbsp;at the Public Schools of Hawai\u2018i Foundation annual dinner Thursday evening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Island Insurance Foundation Chairman Tyler Tokioka said judges were impressed with Cox&#8217;s commitment to ensuring Kapa\u2018a High students have an articulated plan after graduation, whether it&#8217;s community college or trade school, post-secondary education or entering the workforce. He also noted the school&#8217;s expanded dual-credit offerings under Cox&#8217;s leadership to provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while satisfying high school diploma requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tommy is a leader not only at Kapa\u2018a High School but throughout the community. He&#8217;s an advocate for career academies and (Career and Technical Education) work, really building connections and making learning relevant for his students,&#8221; Superintendent Keith Hayashi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayashi also praised Cox&#8217;s innovative solution to&nbsp;challenges&nbsp;recruiting world language teachers at his school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He reached out directly to Japan and brought in Japanese speakers for his students to learn not only the language, but really building in that cultural understanding. So when we&#8217;re looking at &#8216;globally competitive, locally committed&#8217; public school graduates, what better way to do that than to reach out internationally and globally?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cox was awarded a&nbsp;$25,000 prize&nbsp;\u2013 a $10,000 personal cash award and $15,000 toward a school project of his choice. Cox said he plans to use the school award&nbsp;for Kapa\u2018a&#8217;s building and construction CTE class to turn a 20-foot container into a fully furnished, sustainable tiny home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This really validates the work that my teachers and my whole staff and our kids and our community have done since I&#8217;ve been there \u2014 this is a tribute to all of them,&#8221; Cox said. &#8220;I&#8217;m not big into recognition but this does mean a lot. I&#8217;m proud of the positive culture and the strong relationships and just the true meaning of family at Kapa\u2018a High School, how we all work for each other and with each other and support each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two semi-finalists were also recognized \u2014&nbsp;Waianae Intermediate Principal John Wataoka and&nbsp;Waikele Elementary Principal Sheldon Oshio. Semi-finalists&nbsp;each&nbsp;received a $2,000 cash award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifteen HIDOE principals total\u2014 one from each complex area \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/ja\/2024-15-hidoe-principals-honored-as-2024-tokioka-excellence-in-school-leadership-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were honored as nominees<\/a>\u00a0for the recognition in March,\u00a0and each received a $1,000 prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award honors the late Masayuki Tokioka, founder of Island Insurance Company, Ltd. and a proud graduate of Hawai\u2018i public schools.
