{"id":9771,"date":"2024-02-02T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/?p=9771"},"modified":"2025-03-21T10:31:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T20:31:24","slug":"2024-kalani-high-wins-2024-hawaii-lifesmarts-state-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/haw\/2024-kalani-high-wins-2024-hawaii-lifesmarts-state-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Ua lanakila &#039;o Kalani High i ka 2024 Hawai&#039;i LifeSmarts State Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>M\u0100NOA \u2014 Kalani High School&#8217;s &#8220;Team Kalani 4.2&#8221; won the 2024 Hawai\u02bbi LifeSmarts State Competition on Friday, outperforming&nbsp;teams from Waipahu High,&nbsp;Maryknoll School&nbsp;and a&nbsp;second team of schoolmates from&nbsp;Kalani High.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition, held&nbsp;at the University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa&nbsp;Campus Center Ballroom,&nbsp;is&nbsp;organized by the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Business Registration and Insurance Divisions and the Hawai\u02bbi Credit Union League (HCUL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in its 20th year, LifeSmarts tests students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities. Following the preliminary online portion of the competition, top scoring teams from Maryknoll School,&nbsp;Kalani&nbsp;and Waipahu High schools were invited to compete in today\u2019s in-person competition, where they tested their skills through an assessment test, \u201cspeed smarts\u201d activity and game show-style buzzer rounds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing I learned in LifeSmarts that is super useful is different safety tips. Health and safety is one of the most important categories to keep me safe and maybe my future kids down the line,\u201d said team captain and Kalani High senior Brandon Tran.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they learn life skills and learn how to be better at time management,\u201d said coach and Kalani High teacher Mike Zane. \u201cIt\u2019s all student initiated and student led, they have to create their teams, register with the LifeSmarts website and from there they do all the testing on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 2024 state champions, the Kalani 4.2 team will go on to represent Hawai\u02bbi at the National LifeSmarts Competition in San Diego, Calif., from April 18-21, 2024. Members of the team are: Brandon Tran, Andy Chen, Jiaorong (Michelle) He, Kyla Iglesia, and Mason Vuong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite many&nbsp;hours of rigorous studying, practices, meetings after school and on the weekends, the team felt the win was unexpected. However, team captain Tran added: \u201cThe team really deserved it. I saw progress over the past year practicing and working hard. I\u2019m really proud of what everyone has accomplished today.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kalani team looks forward to meeting other teams, placing well and experiencing the chaotic environment with over 300 students from across the country.
