As a television journalist and weather anchor at KITV4 Island News, Hawai\u2018i Island native Carly Yoshida combines her passion for storytelling and service with her commitment to uplifting Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s communities. She was crowned Miss Hawai\u2018i\u2019s Outstanding Teen in 2016 and in June was crowned Miss Hawai\u2018i 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yoshida will represent Hawai\u02bbi at the 99th annual Miss America Competition in September in West Palm Beach, Fla., this week. Following two nights of preliminary competition, 11 semi-finalists will advance to the final competition. From there, five finalists will emerge and compete for the coveted Miss America crown on Sept. 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What was your journey like after high school?<\/strong>
A: <\/strong>After high school, I went straight to Hawai\u2018i Community College to earn my liberal arts degree. I knew I wanted to utilize the incredible University of Hawai\u2018i system we had to stay here at home. I then transferred over to the University of Hawai\u2018i at West O\u2018ahu to complete my bachelor\u2019s in psychology. During that time, I got my behavioral technician certification and worked at an autism center as well as working in a part-time leadership role at Manaola Hawai\u2018i. The opportunity of working as an on-air talent at KITV4 Island News opened up, initially starting off on weekend mornings, and eventually, making my way on-air to our weekday newscasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What are you up to these days?<\/strong>
A<\/strong>: Aside from recently earning the title of Miss Hawai\u2018i 2026 in June, I’ve expanded my knowledge and skillset in the broadcast and journalism industry throughout the four years I’ve been at KITV and have accumulated many roles throughout the news station including weather, traffic, desk anchoring, reporting and digital content producing. I recently just got promoted and will become the permanent desk co-anchor for our Good Morning Hawai\u2018i newscast, that transition will happen this September. This will make me the youngest anchor in the state of Hawai\u2018i at 26 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Why did you choose this career path and what do you enjoy most about it?<\/strong>
A: <\/strong>I didn’t really choose this career path, it chose me. I studied social sciences and psychology because I thought it was fascinating and a universal topic I could take with me anywhere. It also helped with understanding and connecting more with people and our communities. That, along with the experiences I’ve gained throughout life, prepared me for this career opportunity once that door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What makes you #PublicSchoolProud?<\/strong>
A: <\/strong>I’m so proud to be from the Big Island in general, but I believe attending Waikoloa Elementary & Middle School instilled a strong foundation of humble beginnings in my childhood. Waikoloa’s community back then was so small, and that also really helped with the care and guidance from its educators. I can vividly remember each year of my time there and genuinely say that every teacher I’ve had cared so much about our futures. I also found that similar comfort when I went on to Kealakehe High School. I feel that high school really helped shape and structure the habits that set me up for success leading into adulthood. Kealakehe taught me how to juggle a demanding schedule while keeping up with my academics, always making academics the priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What was your favorite subject in school?<\/strong>
A:<\/strong> Throughout my childhood and even into my adult life, I always loved all the science topics. Even though I didn’t always do the best, score-wise, learning about the world around us is such a fascinating topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What type of extracurricular activities were you involved in?<\/strong>
A:<\/strong> I grew up as a Polynesian dancer, mainly in hula and Tahitian. I am from the Big Island, where I started dancing with Halau Manaola in 2012. I competed in Merrie Monarch with them and my love for hula took me to Japan multiple times for hula tours and celebrations. I also got into pageants in the Miss America system when I was in high school, winning the first one I ever competed in, which was Miss Hawai\u2018i’s Outstanding Teen 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What was your favorite school lunch or breakfast?<\/strong>
A<\/strong>: I could never go wrong with pizza or kalua pork and cabbage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Name of a teacher or mentor you\u2019d like to thank?<\/strong>
A: <\/strong>My Aunty Lorna. She ran and still runs the afterschool program at Waikoloa Elementary & Middle School. She was always such a loving and supportive presence for the keiki, also being an incredible foster mom. She has always supported me from when I was so young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What advice do you have for students?<\/strong>
A:<\/strong> My biggest piece of advice from being where I stand now, would be patience. Continue to work hard toward your goals, but try to understand that timing and growth are really everything. Every “no,” or closed door will redirect you to an opportunity that most times is greater in the end, greater than you could’ve expected. You’ll be able to look back and understand why you may not have been ready for your goal in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
