In its inaugural season, Walthall is playing with girls she first met a month ago when practices commenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun getting to know other people and meeting new people and trying to bond with them,\u201d said Walthall, who also plays basketball. \u201cIt\u2019s been a fun experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>League play is underway in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Kaua\u02bbi Interscholastic Federation and Maui Interscholastic League. OIA action continues this Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur dynamic is really well for a bunch of girls who haven\u2019t played with each other before,\u201d said McKinley junior Kiana Aga, a transfer student who didn\u2019t know any of her teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first new sport for high school girls in over 20 years. Hawai\u02bbi is the 12th state in the country to sanction girls flag football as a high school sport. There are 46 Hawai\u02bbi public and charter schools statewide, along with some private schools, fielding a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another 18 state associations have independent or pilot programs, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to show what we\u2019re capable of,\u201d Walthall said. \u201cThat\u2019s the main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams will have the opportunity to compete for league and state championships this spring.
