More than 4,300 pounds of local ground beef, 6,300 pounds of local green lettuce and 4,400 pounds of local tomatoes were distributed to 95 participating schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The featured meal celebrates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmtoschool.org\/our-work\/farm-to-school-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Farm to School Month<\/a>, which highlights the connections between keiki, local food, and agriculture. It also celebrated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National School Lunch Week<\/a>&nbsp;(Oct. 13-17), to promote the importance of healthy school meals and their positive impact on student well-being, both inside and outside of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Roosevelt High School, students expressed their appreciation for the fresh, locally sourced ingredients in the volcano bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought today&#8217;s lunch was really good,\u201d said junior Kainoa Suyat. \u201cI liked how they added all the nutritious things we needed \u2014 lettuce, corn, carrots, and the meat. Even if we don\u2019t have that nutrition at home, we got our nutrition for today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Xinze Li, who typically opts for a salad for lunch, decided to try the featured dish instead. \u201cThe taco bowl today offered a new approach while still including the same protein and vegetables,\u201d he said. \u201cHonestly, the new taste was amazing and surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Li also shared his support for incorporating more locally grown ingredients into school meals. \u201cI think the approach of using more local fresh foods in our meals is definitely a positive,\u201d he said. \u201cIt&#8217;s beneficial for our local farmers and the students. For our local farmers, they don&#8217;t have to worry about not being able to make ends meet\u2026 and for the students, it&#8217;s beneficial for us because we get to eat really fresh ingredients and very fresh food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effort is part of the Department\u2019s farm-to-school initiative, which promotes food sustainability in Hawai\u02bbi and aligns with the goals of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/slh\/Years\/SLH2021\/SLH2021_Act175.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buhat 175<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 to improve student health while supporting local agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s public schools are among the state\u2019s largest institutional consumers of food, serving more than 100,000 student meals each day.
