This year\u2019s theme, \u201cReimagine Your School Lunch Plate,\u201d gave students the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills while celebrating the importance of local agriculture and healthy eating in Hawai\u02bbi.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawai\u02bbi high school students submitted original recipes for healthy main dishes that they wanted to see on their school menus. Kaiser High School, Grade 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guava BBQ Pulled Chicken Sandwich with Whole Grain Bun and Liliko\u2018i Coleslaw with locally sourced guava and liliko\u2018i puree, chicken, and cabbage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy dish combines the flavors of savory and sweet in the guava BBQ sauce, and tart in the liliko\u02bbi coleslaw. I would like to see it served as school lunch because of its healthy local qualities that are also fun to eat and enjoy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-kalani.jpg\" alt=\"Kalani High student Halia Kaaua headshot\" class=\"wp-image-10852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-kalani.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-kalani-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-kalani-15x12.jpg 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Halia Kaaua, Kalani High School, Grade 11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet Sea with locally sourced a\u2018u fish and \u2018ulu (breadfruit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn my eyes this is a unique and healthier option when it comes to school lunch. I know parents and many administrations want keiki to consume healthier food when it comes to school and this meal is pretty simple with ingredients from our home. I&#8217;d love to see this served at our school lunch because it not only tastes good but also teaches us to appreciate and utilize the resources we have right here on our island. It&#8217;s a way to connect with our heritage and promote sustainable eating habits among students.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-mark-copy2.jpg\" alt=\"Molokai High student Mark Angelo Ragonton\" class=\"wp-image-10853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-mark-copy2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-mark-copy2-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hawaiipublicschools.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250417-mark-copy2-15x12.jpg 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Angelo Ragonton, Molokai High School, Grade 11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsunami Elote Shrimp with locally sourced shrimp and corn<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI want to see this dish served at my school because I want to see some sort of seafood-related dish&#8230;.. This shrimp is home grown with a side of elote corn, which is healthy and rich in flavor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three finalists will face off in a live cook-off this summer at the Hawai\u2018i State Farm Fair, where winners will be announced.
